orange and grey Ruffwear front range dog harnessReview of the Ruffwear Front Range Harness

The Ruffwear front range harness has a reputation for being a tough long lasting harness. Ruffwear is a well known brand.

This harness has two points for leash attachment, a loop at the chest to discourage pulling dogs and V ring on top, at the base of the neck for light pulling purposes.

I don’t recommend any Front Range harness as the complete solution to teaching your dog not to pull. Some determined pullers need to be trained not to pull with a better form of control like a Halti or Gentle Leader.

The Ruffwear harness has padded chest and belly areas and is designed  for comfort and strength.

As a little bonus, there is also a pocket to contain your dog’s tags. The trim on the harness is reflective for safety at night.

The Ruffwear front range harness is one of the most expensive on the market, but it is also the most tested and updated model of all the other brands. This harness only has 10 critical reviews, and 142 positive reviews.. No harness is going to fit every dog perfectly, right? Careful measuring is important.

The loop on the chest and the metal link on the back are very sturdy. The link on the back is strong enough to be used for Joring. This is not a dog sledding harness but can be used with Bike Joring, SkiJoring, ScooterJoring etc..

The sizing for Ruffwear Front Range Harness is the following:

  • Extra extra Small 13-17 inches (33-43 cm)
  • Extra Small 17-22 inches (43-56 cm)
  • Small 22-27 inches (56-68 cm)
  • Medium size 27-32 inches (69-81 cm)
  • Large to extra Large sizing 32-42 inches (81-107 cm)

Measure your dog around the widest circumference of his or her chest.  I recommend the following suggestions- If your dog is very narrow/fine boned, and his or her measurements are in the middle zone (or lower), consider sizing down to a smaller size. Contrarily, if your dog is very wide/heavy boned and his measurements are in the middle (or higher), consider sizing up to a larger size.

*I don’t recommend a heavy duty harness like this for a very tiny dog. For one thing, your tiny dog does not need this kind of control and for another, most tiny breeds would find this kind of harness too uncomfortably heavy.

The Supplier has a great return policy either way, so you can simply order another size if it does not fit.

The Ruffwear Front Range harness comes in a wide range of colours, and availability depends on the supplier. The colours that are generally available are Berry Pink,Meadow Green, Twilight Gray, Purple, Orange Poppy, and Blue Dusk.

One of the complaints from reviews was that some people did not know how to fit and adjust the harness to their dogs. I have included a quick video here from Ruffwear to show you how
